Running GT on Linux
GT can run on Linux. If you are one of the ever increasing numbers of Linux users out there and want to run GT on Linux here's a step by step walkthrough of how to do it using Wine. It took me a total of about 3 minutes extra and I had fair (ok, maybe a little worse than fair) performance once I got it running on an AMD Athlon 700 with 500Mb RAM running KDE/SuSE 9.1.
1: The installer will not install onto a Linux machine so you have to install the game onto a Windows machine first and then transfer the files over. Please understand that GT comes in three different types: the browser version (requires Shockwave), the installed Shockwave version (this is an exe file that needs Shockwave to run) and the NON-Shockwave installed version (This is the one you want). The Windows installer will automatically install the smallest download version available and so if you have the right version of Shockwave it will install the Shockwave version. However, you can override this by pressing the 'More info' button, then 'Macromedia Shockwave' from the right-hand nav, then check 'Override Installation Type', then 'Back' twice and then continue as normal. The 'gettiffany.exe' file should be a little less than 2MB if you did it right.
If you can find a way for Wine to use the installer I would LOVE to hear about it. Email travis@dreamsage.com
2: Once you get the correct version installed onto a Windows machine, copy the file structure onto your Linux Machine. I did this by writing a CD but I could have done this over a network or zipped up the files and emailed them to myself.
3: Once you have the files somewhere on your Linux machine, you need to run 'gettiffany.exe' with Wine. I did this by right-clicking the exe file and choosing 'Open with...' and then typing 'wine'. You can do this from a terminal by typing 'wine gettiffany.exe'.
4: If wine is correctly installed, the game should open up and perform like normal.

User Feedback(11/22/04): Just thought I'd inform you that the installer worked for me, although the game is lacking horribly (not playable)
I am using the latest WINE, and the only thing I did to make the installer run is use the DCOM95 patch (which is now native to WINE as of a few versions ago). I was able to use the installer this way by using the patch. I knew about this, even before you made the switch to an IIS/Microsoft based server. You may want to tell people to use the latest WINE, and the installer should
work fine.
